I remember when each of my children turned one. With Darius (he’s our first), we went all out. We invited everyone and anyone. We layed out a huge spread and had a fantastic party. With Andre (our middle), his party was half as big. We invited close friends and family members. Still had a great time, but it was a little more intimate. When Juliana (our third and final), turned one, it was just us. I’ve learned that the best parties are not the big huge extravagant ones. They’re the ones that you celebrate with those closest to you; the most important ones.

This sweet girl is about to turn one. Isn’t she a doll? I mean, she has the perfect face of a doll. We ventured out to a park downtown. I’d never been there and neither had she. It was a mid day shoot with lots of bright sun out and I hadn’t shot a one year old in quite some time. I had been praying and wishing that I still had it.

It was so nice spending the warm afternoon outside beneath the trees and the buzzing people. I think that Miss O gave me some great shots that her parents will surely cherish! Take a peek:

I have been reflecting over the last few days since the horrendous devastation began in Haiti. I can’t imagine what they are going through, the hoplessness that many must feel, the pain, the suffering. I can’t imagine what the job of re-creation entails and how they feel after losing so many loved ones. This morning I saw the story of a 13 year old boy who lost his mother and father; he’d suffered a broken leg and a head injury. The videographer showed the medics trying to brace the leg and the boy screamed with pain. My heart breaks.

When you read this, please take a moment to say a prayer for the children in Haiti. As an adult I can’t imagine not having my family and having my entire world fall apart, but even more, I can’t imagine being a child and losing everything you’ve known. Please pray for peace, strength, hope, love and most importantly, faith.

For every single session booked with me this year, I will donate $10 towards disaster relief and rebuilding effort through my church’s ministry. Back in November, my friend Ashlee had asked me if I be available to photograph her family for her mother-in-law. While normally I have all of December off, I did make this exception. One reason is because I love Ashlee so much, another reason was because it was a surprise, but the most important reason was because this wasn’t just for Grandma, this was for them:

You’ll find me talking more and more about this throughout this year. I love photography, and I love capturing memories. But more than all of that, I want my kiddos to have something for themselves when they are my age. Something beautiful and creative, something that shows them how happy they are and how wonderful and beautiful life is.

I’m making this for your children so that they can have these same things. Because, afterall, isn’t everything we do for them?

When I was younger, my sisters and I would fight like cats and dogs. The 3 of us were so different. Me, the artistic (and I admit, “emo”, haha. that word wasn’t even around back then), Michele, the academic (and middle), and Kari the happy go lucky. We were so different back then. But now, as adults and making our own lives, raising children or starting families, we are so much alike. And the love I have for them both is not like any other.

I photographed these sisters last week, on the coldest day of the year. Their father is a great friend and has helped me immensely over the last year in all sorts of business matters. When I’d asked him if he’d taken his daughters’ photos this year and he said no, there was no way I was going to have it. Unfortunately the only day I happened to have available was Friday…and as luck would have it, the coldest day of the year, the day it snowed 3-5 inches in HOUSTON! As I talked to him on the phone earlier in the day I was telling him that I was praying the snow would stay long enough to do their photo shoot in it. He hates the snow, coming from Ohio where it snows all winter. I was excited, gleeful, and enjoying the snow (even while driving in town on the freeways during a early Friday rush hour). He was grumpy, lol. In the end, I think his prayers for the snow to go away won out because when it was time to take their photos, the sun was shining, the air was crisp, the snow was gone…Oh well, I’ll hope for another round of snow

My goodness! I’d totally forgotten what it felt like to be in the middle of my busiest season! Christmas deadlines are near and I’m going a million miles a minute! I wouldn’t trade it for a thing, though

Today I have an awesome session to share with you! This mama has been planning her family session for quite a while! I met her a while back while our kids attend the same preschool. She is so super sweet and I have really been excited to photograph her family. She and her husband have 5 kiddos and they are all so sweet. I love large families and how they share the love for each other. Check out this gorgeous fam!

Well, it’s not really a park, but a piece of land I have been spying on for the last 2 years. I drive by it a few times a week and always feel it’s so pretty. Unfortunately they mowed the grass only days before this shoot. I was hoping for tall wispy grass, but with all the weather we’ve had lately, everything is soggy….Hmmm, just means I’ll have to try try again!

But, the lack of long grass didn’t make a difference in how pretty these next few shots are. That beautiful evening glow paired with this super cute girl gave me some fantastic images! She is so sweet. I love shooting girls this age (she’s 5). They have their own ideas about how their shoot should go and really put their personality into it. Afterall, that’s really what we want to remember, right? Take a peek at Miss B!

Back in August, Juliana’s best friend turned 3 and to celebrate her big birthday, we broke out the pettiskirts for the photoshoot! Many of you may not know that I have about 7 of these beautiful skirts hanging on my wall waiting for little girls to use them for their photos! If you ever want to add some flare and frills to your daughter’s photo shoot, pettiskirts are a fun way to do it!

I had never been to this location, but had driven passed it many times. Each time I would scout it out wondering if it would work for a photo shoot. I was very excited when this mom suggested this location! We set out on a Friday evening, just after a slight shower had come through. I always love the color of the earth after the rain. Everything seems more vibrant, more alive. And this was a perfect setting for this family of four!

This mama won a silent auction item from one of the local elementary school’s festivals. She signed her name up on a whim. Can I tell you how honored that makes me feel? She saw something in my work to just purchase something without even really seeing my whole gallery! Wow! I am truly blessed and I hope she sees something in these photos to help make her heart skip a beat!
