She called me late Thursday afternoon. I wouldn’t have answered since it was after business hours, but the area code wasn’t local. I thought maybe it was a lab calling with questions to an order. Instead it was this sweet mama. She’d wanted to know if I had any sessions available over the weekend. Normally, I probably wouldn’t have, but with this dreadful stifling heat, my schedule was a bit free. They could only do it this weekend because they were going back home. “What? You don’t live here? You just googled photographers and found me and want to book me?” I don’t know if those words came out of my mouth, but they definitely were running through my head.

You see, it’s very rare that someone calls Thursday to book a session for Sunday; even rarer that they are from a city 4.5 hours away. Sometimes I need to be pinched to realize that I really get to do this awesome job that I love so much

So Sunday came, and we met in the park. Mom and dad booked me for a purpose: the Crystal Charity Ball’s annual Children’s Book. I hadn’t really heard about this book but when they told me about it, how could I not look into it? The Crystal Charity Ball is an amazing charity that has donated over 90 million dollars to children’s charities around the Dallas area for over 50 years. Amazing! There’s this crazy thing that happens when you listen to people’s stories, when you sit and pray for them, when you open yourself up to them. They do the same thing for you.

I met Karen through a friend sometime last year. She’s one of the sweetest gals with the biggest of hearts. A large part of her heart is filled with her passion and love for her neice and nephew. When I first met Karen, it was the beginning of a long journey that she had ahead of her. Lot’s of questions, lot’s of fears and a whole lot of love. For many reasons I won’t go into now, Karen and her husband have adopted them (legally) into their immediate family.

The joy and love these kiddos have in their new family is amazing to witness.

I know so many people recently who have chosen adoption and I think it’s an amazing thing when you open yourself up to taking in another child who isn’t yours by blood. My friend Lisa is starting up an adoption ministry over at the Met. It’s brand new and exciting and a Christian ministry for people with questions about adopting children. They wanted it. I wanted it. The last month or so has been a bit exhausting. As soon as we got back from Dallas, the countdown was on. They were so bored and ready to do something. I even overheard the older one tell the younger that he couldn’t wait to go back to school. I wrote that one down in the book.

They were up at 6:30 this morning, did their morning routine, made their own lunches and were ready to go by 7:15. I don’t even know if I was up by then, to be honest with you.

And, like last year, here are our 1st day of school photos!

One of the many things I get to witness during a photo session is a parent’s great love for their kiddos. One of the other things I get to witness is a parent’s hope – plea- cry – that the photos will turn out okay.

The ages from 12 months to 3 years are the hardest to photograph. Kids are moving. Kids are experimenting, learning, soaking it all in. They are determined and they are curious and when you add all of these things together and take them out to an open area where they are not confined to one little space…watch out. Because, really, you can’t reason with them. They want what they want and often we are not able to communicate with them and let them know that if they just sit still for 2 minutes, it could all be over…I speak as a mama/photographer whose own children…far past the ages of 1-3… will hardly sit still for me to take just one little snap. I feel your pain.

But, the crazy thing is, while you’re panic-ing, and stressed out. While you’re running around trying to get them to smile, some sort of magic just happens in between all of those moments that you can’t recognize or see.

I know I’ve probably said it before, but, I love little girls! I love the way they prance around, I love how creative and imaginative they are. I love seeing their sweet faces and they are so good at giving you pretty eyes.

Little Miss E and I met last week for her 2 year old birthday shoot. Her mama drove her all the way up from the Clear Lake area, but E was a champ. She didn’t get fussy one bit and braved what we thought would be a humid and mosquito filled evening. Luck was on our side though, because the mosquitoes were scarce and the breeze was beautiful. And Miss E was, too. Check out this beauty below!

I can’t believe how fast kids grow. One minute they’re in diapers and the next their in prom dresses. I photographed these girls last summer and it’s amazing to see how much they’ve grown up. I don’t have very many words for this post. These girls are precious and beautiful and, well, the photos speak for themselves

That’s what his mama said as she glanced at the photo at the back of the camera. I’m realizing it too, this week. Sometimes I just look at my kids in amazement and wonder how on earth they look completely different–completely grown– than when they were just babies. I often get too busy with life to stop and stare and take in all of their beauty: their smiles, their expressions, their little noses, their frowns, their smiling eyes. *Sigh* the list could go on forever. The truth is, they grow so fast and right before our eyes that sometimes it just takes a photo to stop and see exactly how much they’re changing.

Mr B, here, celebrated his 8th birthday in January and his mama and I have been trying for a few months to get a session completed. And we finally did! I was so excited to take him to a new location that I’ve been wanting to test out. He did so well and gave me so much of himself and his personality. I love sessions like this And I’m happy to say that this location is perfect if you’re wanting an urban session! Take a look at the very grown up Mr B.

I have to admit, when my friend Kim (of Kim Milburn Photography) talked about using hats in her photography, I rolled my eyes a bit. You see, I just couldn’t picture it. Kim’s style is very unique and I think she’s an expert in using hats with her subjects. Me? Not so much. I go with the “simple is better” approach. Well, the truth is, I’ve never used them! Little ol’ me was afraid of them, so to speak. And now? I’ve found what might be the coolest and cutest hats around. I first saw these hats from NuxieMade probably a year ago (beware of clicking the link! It’s taking you to etsy. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll be spending hours upon hours looking at the amazing and creative art and items that these creative genious’ provide!). But I never pictured my kiddos wearing them. Now that I have them (5 of them!!) I think I’m totally crushing on the hat movement And well, I do have some of the cutest models around. That helps a bit too!

Sometimes, I feel like my kids are the ones who tell me what to do. They each have their own personalities and demands. Sometimes, I can’t help but to follow their lead and allow them to run the day. Now, this is not to say that I’m a pushover because I am so not! But there are days where I have to just give in or pick my battles. Whether it’s Juliana wanting to dress up and actually where her princess outfit to the grocery store (I even saw a little girl at church dressed as Belle!) or the boys spending the entire day outside in the sun and heat and smelling like…well, what little boys smell like after they’ve been running around for 5 hours in the Texas sun (I’ll never forget a friend telling me to just wait until their no longer toddlers anymore and they smell like wet dogs–gasp!). Yeah, as a mom of 3 I have to pick the battles. Because the alternative would be that I would be high strung and that crazy mom who doesn’t let her children play-touch-run-ride-talk.

When talking to clients prior to their sessions, I often say that we’ll just go with the flow. A big part of capturing personalities is to allow the kids to be who they are and a huge part in photographing babies is that, like since the day they were born, they set the tone of the day. So when I show up and start talking to the kids and getting playful with them, please don’t be offended if I ignore you and please please don’t be anxious or apologize for your kids! I want them to be exactly who they are and feel it’s my job to help bring the fun

The images from the session below are pretty much a summary of what I explained above. We had fun (well I did! I hope they did too!) and explored and went crazy (go crazy! go crazy!). Most importantly, they were the ones who led the way and set the tone of the session. Is it challenging? Yes, most definitely. But it’s also rewarding to see your family’s realness captured for you to enjoy.
