God is Good

One October morning, I was sitting in on a meeting. I honestly don’t remember why I  was there or what the meeting was about. It hadn’t started yet and we were just sitting around the table talking. A friend had gotten a phone call so we waited. When he got off the phone, he’d said that his nephew had been having seizures and they’d found a brain tumor. His nephew was 5. So we sat there, quietly at the table…and we prayed.

I don’t know why I was there in that meeting on that day. But I continued to pray for Sterling. I’d read updates on the blog that his mother and father had started. I started following his dad on twitter and soon after his mother, too. I became inspired and awed by this story. I don’t really know this family, but I know that their faith has inspired me. I honestly don’t know how to put it in words. This little 5 year old boy just knows that God is for him, that God will take care of him. This couple knows and gives glory to God in all circumstances. I would like to think that my faith is this deep and strong.

Anyhow…A few months back, I did this family home movie for my friends. Gretchen had this idea and asked if I might be willing to do this same thing for Sterling and his family. What she didn’t know was that I’d been thinking and hoping that I could for a while now. But because I wasn’t really in touch with them, I didn’t really know them, and well, I didn’t want to just be this complete stranger showing up and saying “Hey! I know you don’t know me but I feel like I know you!”…I just let it go. But then Gretchen asked…And so last week, we did. We made a Live Love Movie for Sterling and his family to celebrate this new normal that they have…It just so happened to fall on the 2 month marker of Sterling being seizure-free. Today, Sterling is free to be himself. His family is free of worry. They are all getting used to this new gift of living, and it’s not taking much to do it! I rejoice with them!

Ok, so the movie’s not done, but I was cleaning up my memory cards because I’m heading to Costa Rica next week and I stumbled upon this photo. I couldn’t help but share it. God is so good.

I heard it coming around the corner. There’s no confusing it for anything else, the big brown truck. I think the kids can hear it better than an ice cream truck and they seem to always think that the truck is there to deliver something for them.

When the truck drove up and stopped in front of our house I, too, couldn’t help but get excited. And then the driver came out of the truck carrying a big white cooler. I had been expecting a package from my mom and thought it odd that she’d packaged it in a cooler. But then I thought again that maybe my dad had packaged it and, well, honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if he’d packaged books in a cooler, he can be funny that way.

But, no, he handed me the cooler and it was something much better. Fillet Mignon. seriously! and it was addressed to me! I felt like I’d won the lottery! haha! Somebody knows me well to have gifted me with something as delicious as fillet mignon! Thank yous in the form of gourmet food are something I’m a huge fan of! haha!

And it turns out it was from my wonderful friend, Ricky. I’ve know Ricky for a few years now and he’s always been supportive of my business and art. He’s been a sounding board, an encourager and a friend. I’m so happy for him, he’s found a wonderful woman and he jotted across the country to be with her. They’re sealing the deal this summer and asked me to photograph their family while they were here on a quick trip. I couldn’t be happier for them…ok, I could, if they moved back here to Houston. I’m secretly hoping they’ll be here soon.

Thanks, Ricky, for your friendship, for your encouragement and for fillet mignon!! xxo.

live love: The Yates Family – At Home | Houston Photographer

As I was sitting in church this weekend, something became suddenly apparent to me.

I’ve always said that I love documenting memories for families, capturing moments for them that will eventually hide in the corners of their minds. I have loved giving them something tangible to remember. But what dawned on me this weekend was that, while this is very important to me, it’s not the most important part of this. The most important part is getting to participate. Getting to be a part of a family: to see the way they move and live and love together. To feel their joy, to laugh with them. I get to live with them.

If you’ve read any posts I’ve written about newborns, you’ll know that some of my fondest memories are when I first brought my babies home. The house is quiet and still and lazy. Nothing is expected from any of us and someone is always bringing dinner. I loved getting to cuddle with the babies and as we added, seeing the little ones cuddle with their brother and sister. If I could etch these memories in my mind forever, they’d be in the first chapter of the book.

So when I got to document this family after a few weeks of bringing their newest addition home, I was elated. And it was just how I remembered my own family. Carefree, loving, warm and happiness. I’m so grateful – and a bit jealous (wink, wink) that they get to have these wonderful memories!

So, sit back with a fresh cuppa and take a look at the Yates family at home…
