love thursday | Houston Wildflower Portraits

Often, I get stuck in a sort of rut when it comes to my photography. I learn something and hone it and stick with it because I can do it good. But, if I did that all the time, I would never grow in my skill.

This week, my friend Kim and I were discussing shooting in full sun. If you have ever been a client of ours, you’d know that our favorite time to shoot is late evening. There is something magical that happens in those late hours. The sun aligns perfectly behind the trees and creates this amazing glitter of light. That light is soft and warm and comfortable and beautiful. Despite our love for this special time of day,  we decided to try and accomplish full sun shooting.

Ok, let me just say that I was definitely not in my comfort zone! Full sun, harsh shaddows, squinty eyes. YIKES! But we took my daughter and her best friend out to try and accomplish something. While it’s not my best work ever (I totally need to learn how to both shoot AND process full sun images), I think it was a great opportunity to try and push myself to try something different…to try and grow.

Why the title “love thursday”? Well, the love that my daughter has for her little bestie is second to none. They can spend hours together and not fight, and they can spend hours together and be at each other’s necks…But they end up right where they started…in love.

Sabrina Bowen - Gorgeous! I too dread shooting in full sun. I book my sessions in the early morning and evenings to avoid it. Love these.

I love the golden look of these and the field of flowers. I too only try to shoot in evening light. I think I’ll stick with that for now. I’m not quite ready to venture out of my comfort zone. Haha…
